Comment on Day 16 – John 16 by The Fisher's

Come Holy Spirit... Jesus continues to comfort the disciples. He tells them in the future, things are going to be tough. A time is coming when they will be outcasts of the synagogue. "But an hour is coming for everyone who kills you will think he is doing a service to God". We remember Paul and how zealous he was for his "religion", rounding up those of "the way" and being a part of their killing. Oh, the things we do in the name of religion. Jesus protected the disciples while he was with them. Now he's going back to the Father, so he prepares them for things yet to come. Jesus lets his disciples know that if he doesn't go, he's hindering a greater benefit. He is localized now, but when he goes he will gain omnipresence. The disciples do more "works of God" when Jesus is absent than when he was with them.
The Holy Spirit is here because Jesus is not. The judgment is that the world rejected Jesus. Now the Holy Spirit convicts the world (not the believer) of their sin of unbelief. The Holy Spirit continuously reveals the righteousness of Christ to the believer. He completes our understanding and leads us completely to all truth. The Holy Spirit never speaks of himself. His sole commitment is to glorify the Lord Jesus - not people or personalities. In John 14:26, the Holy Spirit "brings all things to our remembrance". In John 15:26, the Holy Spirit testifies presently about Jesus. In John 16:13, the Holy Spirit "guides us into all truth". Those are "things to come". The purpose of the Holy Spirit for the believer is to glorify Christ forever and ever, while we are in this body. No more and no less! Just the righteousness of the Lamb of God - The I Am - The Messiah - Jesus, the Christ. The Holy Spirit testifys that the Son has set us free. Two thousand years ago, God punished sin. His Son, Jesus, became sin who had no sin; so we became the righteousness of God. Jesus took our sin and we get His righteousness. It's comforting to know that the Comforter says, "we are His beloved - we are His children".
So here we are in two places.... In Christ, and in the world. In Christ, we have comfort, assurance, peace, love and forgiveness. In the world, we let our light shine. We gladly let the world eat of our fruit. We show them in love, that there is a better way; an easier life; and an abundant life. There will be persecution, but we do not fear. Christ in us has overcome the world. We continue to run the race and keep the faith!!

Yum! Yum! Yum!... This fruit is delicious! Have some!
Hours before Jesus goes to the cross, it's interesting that He's comforting His sheep (the disciples) instead of them comforting Him. The Good Shepherd says, "My sheep hear my voice and follow Me. No one can snatch them from my hand or the Father's hand." So salvation is not the issue here. He's talking about fruit bearing. When we walk through the orchard, we eat the fruit! The fruit of Jesus is comfort, assurance, love, forgiveness, peace and abundance. This is the fruit that we bear. It is for the world; so lets go give it away. Yum! Yum! Yum! - It's delicious! Have some!

Do not have a troubled heart -- the Helper is coming. The passion of our Lord is close; so He continues to comfort His sheep. With Jesus, the way is easy. Because of sin, we have missed the mark. We know we need a Savior and that's the truth. With Jesus, we shed that "old" man and all its trappings and they are replaced with love, forgiveness, peace, comfort, assurance, compassion and kindness. That's the kind of bait we can do some serious fishing with!!

A little bit of Peter in all of us...
With the redemption of mankind drawing near, Jesus spends some time alone with the disciples. He gives us examples of love and compassion for others. Peter has a hard time humbling himself to allow the Lord to wash his feet. After all, Peter is a man's man. A real man in Peter's mind would not have his feet washed by another. That "old" man in him has not been fully crucified yet; but by the grace of God it's dying daily. Jesus tells us to do the things He does... serve others; forgive them; love them; encourage them; be a light to them; gently straighten the crooked thinking and do it all in love. If we do these things, Jesus says, "we are blessed."
Five times in the book of John, John refers to himself as - "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Peter said, "I will never leave the Lord and I will die for Him." In a weak moment, Peter denies ever knowing who the Lord is. At supper, John is literally laying on Jesus' heart and Jesus announces that one of them will betray Him. Peter, who is sitting at the table with them, asks John to ask Jesus - "who is it that will betray Him?" Why can't Peter ask the Lord himself? Peters' boasting of his love for the Lord kept him at a distance. That intimate relationship John had, put him right on Jesus' heart. When we boast of the Lords' love for us, we are as close as we can be to the Lord - right on His heart!

Jesus is being honored at Bethany with a meal prepared by his friends. I can only imagine the gracious words falling from his lips while they lounge around the table. Words of encouragement, hope, love and life. Ah yes, that's the Savior.
Large crowds hear that Jesus is at Lazarus' house, so they come not only to see Jesus, but also see the man that was once dead but is now alive. Now on account of Jesus and Lazarus, many are coming to put their faith in Christ. The chief priests are losing their popularity. Instead of them increasing and Jesus decreasing; the reverse is happening. So now, Lazarus has to die again, along with Jesus. The Pharisees have eyes, but yet they are blind. They are alive, but yet they have a dead heart. What they need is birth! A transformation - a "renewing of the mind". When we are transformed, we begin to see clearly. "Old things are passed away and behold all things become new." So we start on a new journey spreading the "Good News". Encouraging, lifting up, helping and loving all men! Now that's living!!

I once was dead, but now I'm alive! Just as Lazarus was dead in the physical, we too are dead in the spiritual, until we are "raised". The old man in us is dying daily, and its not us who lives, but Christ in us. The disciples warned Jesus that it could be dangerous for Him to return to Judea because the Jews wanted to stone Him. Jesus said, "A man who walks by the night stumbles." The word "night" in the Greek means: a time for deeds of shame and sin. It also means: a time of moral stupidity and darkness. When we walk in the light, we walk in peace, love and kindness. This is the fruit the world longs for.
So Jesus continues on his mission to raise a dead man. Now the same disciple (Thomas) who will not believe unless he sees, tells the others - "looks like this is the end - we have come to the end of our life - we might as well go with Him and die also."
Sister Martha knows Lazarus will be raised at the last day. But soon she will find out not only is Jesus "Resurrection" but He is "Life". We are raised now in Christ. Once our eyes were blind, but now we see. Sister Mary is always at the feet of Jesus, whether in anguish, whether serving or listening to His teaching. We find resolve, mercy, love, forgiveness, kindness and goodness at the feet of Jesus. That empowers us to spread the Good News! The new life, the resurrected life... I once was dead, but now I'm alive.
